Apple started testing iOS 27.3 on 4 November 2026, and it is the biggest update to iOS 27 since the new system launched in September.
There is a lot in it. Siri can finally do useful jobs inside your apps. Safari gets vertical tabs. The Health app gets a fresh look, and StandBy is no longer limited to the iPhone Duo.
But here is the part most headlines skip: you probably should not install it yet. Right now it is a test version, and test versions can be rough. This guide walks through what is new, who should wait, and how to update safely when the final version lands.
What’s new in iOS 27.3
The update touches a lot of apps at once. Some changes are big. Some are small. Here are the ones that will actually change how you use your phone.
Siri AI can finally do real jobs inside your apps
Siri has been able to answer questions for years. Now it can act inside your apps, and that is a bigger deal than it sounds.
In Mail, Siri can unsubscribe you from mailing lists and undo a message you just sent. In Safari, it can clear your browsing history, manage tabs and windows, save an article to your Reading List, or close duplicate tabs for you. In Files, it can tidy things up and delete files you have not touched in a while.
There are new Siri actions across Calendar, Files, Journal, Mail, Maps, Messages, Music, Notes, Photos, Preview, Reminders, Safari, Shortcuts, and Weather. Not sure what Siri can do in a particular app? Just ask it. You can ask Siri what it can do in each app, and it will tell you.
Apple is also opening this up to developers. Any app can now bring its own actions into Siri using App Intents, so the list of things Siri can do should keep growing after launch.
Safari gets vertical tabs and a smarter dark mode
If you keep twenty tabs open, you will like this one. Safari now has a vertical tabs layout you can switch on in Settings. Your tabs sit down the side of the screen instead of across the top, which makes a long list much easier to scan.
There is also an Adaptive Dark Mode for websites that never built one of their own. And in Safari’s advanced settings, you will find a new option to “Use Global Privacy Control”, which tells websites not to sell or share your browsing data.
The Health app gets Insights and Longevity tabs
The redesigned Health app is back in iOS 27.3, and it is trying to do more than show you charts.
A new Insights tab pulls together your latest health data: Activity Rings, heart rate, sleep score, and vitals. Apple Intelligence can then use that information to offer Personal Guidance, with suggestions based on your goals and what you actually do.
The Longevity tab looks at your health data over time. It covers seven areas: heart health, sleep, mental wellbeing, movement health, metabolic health, hearing, and nutrition. It also has a Health Age feature, which compares your health metrics with your actual age. It uses data like resting heart rate, VO2 max, heart rate variability, sleep, and blood work results. The data comes from your Apple Watch, plus fitness checks you can do at home with your iPhone camera.
StandBy comes to every iPhone, and the Duo gets some love
StandBy, the bedside-clock mode that arrived with the iPhone Duo, is now coming to all iPhones that can run iOS 27. There are updated Analog and Digital Clock faces with more colour and complication options, plus new Calendar and Weather faces. You can even make several versions of each face and swipe between them.
iPhone Duo owners get two extras. Reachability is now available, so you can swipe from the edge of the outer display to pull content down within thumb’s reach. Turn it on in Settings, under Accessibility and then Touch. The front display keyboard has been tweaked too, with slightly taller keys, a wider space bar, and the emoji and number keys swapped around. If you missed the launch, here is what the iPhone Duo changes — and what it doesn’t.
Smaller touches worth knowing about
A few more changes are easy to miss. The VPN toggle in Control Center can now switch between VPNs instead of just turning the last one on or off. Apple Music gets a “Selfie Sing” option that records you singing karaoke, with voice effects you can adjust. Apple Fitness+ adds a Gym Strength workout that builds a four-week plan around your goals, experience, schedule, and equipment. And in Australia, RCS support arrives for Telstra customers.
Should you install iOS 27.3 right now?
Short answer: probably not. Not yet, anyway.
Apple has only started testing iOS 27.3. The version in testing now is a beta, which means it is still being fixed. Betas can drain your battery faster, break an app you rely on, or crash at the worst moment. That is normal for a test version, and it is exactly why most people should wait for the finished release.
There is one exception. If you enjoy testing early software and you have a spare iPhone, go ahead. But never install a beta on the only phone you depend on for work, banking, or family calls. If that phone breaks, you have no backup plan.
Apple has not announced a final release date yet. The sensible move is to wait, read the early reviews when the public release lands, and then update on your own schedule. Our guide to software updates and what they change explains why waiting a few days after release is often the smarter move.
How to get your iPhone ready for iOS 27.3
A little prep now saves a lot of stress later. Do these four things before you tap update.
1. Back up your iPhone. This is the one step you must not skip. If anything goes wrong during the update, a fresh backup is what gets your photos, messages, and settings back. Our backup guide walks through the whole process for your phone and your laptop.
2. Free up some space. Big updates need room to download and install. If your phone is nearly full, delete a few old videos or offload apps you have not opened in months. Aim for at least a few gigabytes free.
3. Charge up and connect to Wi-Fi. Plug your phone in and join a stable Wi-Fi network. Updates over mobile data can be slow and expensive, and a phone that dies mid-update is a headache you do not need.
4. Check that your iPhone can run it. iOS 27.3 is an update for iPhones that already run iOS 27. If your phone is on iOS 27 now, you are fine.
How to update your iPhone to iOS 27.3
When the final version arrives, updating takes about five minutes of your time. The phone does the rest.
Open Settings, tap General, then tap Software Update. Your iPhone will check for the new version. When iOS 27.3 appears, tap Download and Install. You may need to enter your passcode and agree to the terms.
Leave your phone plugged in and on Wi-Fi while it works. It will restart once or twice. That is normal. Do not force-restart it or unplug it while the Apple logo is on screen.
Want it to happen on its own next time? On the same Software Update screen, turn on Automatic Updates. Your phone will then install new versions overnight while it charges. Apple Support has the full step-by-step instructions for updating your iPhone if you get stuck.
If the update goes wrong
Most updates go smoothly. If yours does not, stay calm and work through these steps.
First, check your storage. The most common reason an update fails is a full phone. Free up space and try again. Second, restart your iPhone and try the update once more. Third, check your Wi-Fi. A weak connection can stall a download halfway.
If the update still will not install, or your phone gets stuck on the Apple logo, do not keep tapping random buttons. Connect it to a computer, or restore it from the backup you made before you started. That backup is your safety net, and it is the reason step one mattered so much.
iOS 27.3 questions, answered
When will iOS 27.3 be released?
Apple started testing it on 4 November 2026 and has not announced a final date yet. Expect the public release after a few rounds of testing.
Will my iPhone get iOS 27.3?
If your iPhone runs iOS 27, yes. The update is for iPhones that already run iOS 27.
Is the iOS 27.3 beta safe to install?
It is a test version, so it can have bugs, battery drain, or broken apps. Wait for the final release unless you are testing on a spare phone.
Will iOS 27.3 slow my iPhone down?
It should not. New features can use more battery at first while the phone re-indexes, but that usually settles within a day or two.
What is the biggest new feature in iOS 27.3?
For most people, it is Siri AI doing real jobs inside apps, plus Safari’s vertical tabs and the redesigned Health app.
The bottom line
iOS 27.3 is a genuinely useful update, not a flashy one. Siri becomes more helpful, Safari gets easier to manage, and the Health app starts acting like a coach instead of a filing cabinet.
The smart move is simple: back up your phone now, wait for the finished release, and update when you have an hour to spare. Your future self will thank you.
